Village Flood Maps
The storm of October 1963 is the most
severe storm to hit Barrow in recorded history. Winds with gusts of up to
75 miles per hour blew across an ice-free ocean causing wave heights estimated
at 10 feet to develop on a storm surge of 11 to 12 feet. Considerable coastal
damage occurred.
We currently have flood maps for Barrow and Browerville. They are based
upon this storm because it demonstrated that a storm surge of up to 12
feet is possible. These maps show the areas of Barrow and Browerville
that would be flooded if the sea level rose to an elevation of 12 feet
above mean sea level. These maps, however, do not show areas that would
be inundated by seawater due to wave action.
In the future we intend to make available similar flood maps of other
North Slope coastal villages.
These maps are provided as JPEG files and as PDF files.
